How to protect yourself
- Pause before acting: Genuine organisations will never pressure you to act urgently or bypass normal checks. If you feel like you are being put under pressure to act, step away.
- Verify independently: If you receive a request that seems unusual, even if it appears to come from a business you recognise, call the company directly using a number you already have on file, not one provided in the message.
- Guard personal details: Genuine businesses will never ask you to share passwords, PINs, or one-time codes.
- Be sceptical of unsolicited investment opportunities, particularly those promising high, guaranteed returns. If it seems too good to be true, it probably is.
- Talk to us: If anything regarding a payment feels off, however small, please reach out. There is no such thing as a silly question when it comes to protecting your assets.
Where to find reliable information
You can always search official business registers such as Companies House, the Financial Conduct Authority or even Google/Google News to see whether there is any third-party reference to a business entity. While scammers are getting more sophisticated, they don’t tend to stay under the radar for long. Independent third-party searches may reveal whether others have already had dealings with the company you are speaking to.
